PE and Sport Premium

Sports Premium Funding

All young people should have the opportunity to live healthy and active lives. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation and is central to meeting the government’s ambitions for a world-class education system.

Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression), and children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.

The School Sport and Activity Action Plan set out government’s commitment to ensuring that children and young people have access to at least 60 minutes of sport and physical activity per day, with a recommendation of 30 minutes of this delivered during the school day (in line with the Chief Medical Officers guidelines which recommend an average of at least 60 minutes per day across the week).

The PE and sport premium can help primary schools to achieve this aim, providing primary schools with £320m of government funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport offered through their core budgets. It is allocated directly to schools so they have the flexibility to use it in the way that works best for their pupils. The PE and sport premium survey highlighted the significant impact which PE and Sport has had in many primary schools across England.

The Government believes that headteachers and school leaders should decide how to use the funding for PE and Sports in school. They are held accountable for the decisions they make through:

  • The performance outcomes of all pupils compared with their peers
  • The Ofsted inspection framework, under which inspectors focus on the attainment of pupil groups, in particular in those areas where specific funding has been provided
  • The reports that schools are required to publish online for Parents

At Bream CofE Primary School we believe in the development of the whole child and that PE plays a vital part in this process. We support healthy living and the sports premium helps us to introduce children to new sports and to become more skilled in the everyday sports. We provide a wide range of activities in school which aim to engage and inspire all our pupils.

We know that sports in themselves, do not just deliver physical benefits. They help children to learn to be disciplined, to take turns, to display good sportsmanship and to strive to do their best. Through participating in sporting activities our pupils learn about the importance of key values for life. The social aspects of sport can also often be beneficial to all children and confidence and well-being can develop from taking part in physical activities. PE provides our pupils with a safe environment to form social and moral values in pupils, helping them to learn how to deal with competition; wining and losing and the importance of taking part. However, we must also be mindful that some children do not enjoy physical activity; they may be overweight, poor in their co-ordination or lack confidence and thus they feel alienated from these kinds of activities. We need to provide a variety of opportunities to inspire all of our pupils to be more active.

At Bream CofE Primary School we aim:

  • for all children to take part in regular and structured physical activity.
  • for children's core skills and competence in physical activity to grow.
  • to increase participation in a physical activity both in school and out of school.
  • to embed the idea that regular exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.

We use our Sports Premium Funding to help us meet the following Aims of the National Curriculum for Physical Education.

  • To develop the competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • To increase the level of physical activity for our pupils
  • To engage in competitive sports and activities
  • To lead healthy active lifestyles.
