Oak Class (Year 6)

Academic Year 2025/26

Hello and welcome to Oak class.  My name is Mr Cox and I am the Year 6 class teacher and Deputy Headteacher.  I also lead Teaching & Learning, English, Geography and PE across the school.  I run the School Council which has some very enthusiastic members who are helping to improve the school.  I have been teaching now for around 10 years and I am passionate about providing high-quality teaching and learning to all pupils.  My primary aim as a class teacher is to provide a safe, engaging learning environment where all learners can flourish and be the best that they can be.  In my free time, I enjoy reading, exercising and walking my springer spaniel called Ivy. I also have a daughter now who I love spending time with.

Our curriculum themes for the Autumn term are The Sikh Empire (History) and Energy Sources (Geography). In our study of the Sikh Empire, we explore how strong leadership and the idea of unification helped shape a powerful and influential period in history. We learn to analyse sources, assess how beliefs and places drive change, and understand why different interpretations of history exist. As we go, we develop skills to evaluate historical significance and explain the achievements that made the Sikh Empire stand out. In our geography unit on energy sources, we explore why energy is vital to modern life and how different types—renewable and non-renewable—impact people and the planet. We examine examples of energy sources, their global trading routes, and weigh the pros and cons of each. We also learn to use maps in practical ways: identifying human features, locating UK cities, and applying six-figure grid references. Alongside this, we investigate how transport links have evolved, consider where energy sources are located and why, and even design interview questions to gather real-world insights. Finally, we practise plotting points on sketch maps and understand the importance of geographical markers like the Prime Meridian.
