Oak Class (Year 6)

Hello and welcome to Oak class. My name is Mr. Cox and I am the Year 6 class teacher and Deputy Headteacher. I also lead Teaching & Learning, English and PE across the school. I run the School Council which has some very enthusiastic members who are helping to improve the school. I have been teaching now for around 10 years and I am passionate about providing high-quality teaching and learning to all pupils. My primary aim as a class teacher is to provide a safe, engaging learning environment where all learners can flourish and be the best that they can be. In my free time, I enjoy reading, exercising and walking my springer spaniel called Ivy.

Our themes for the Autumn term are World War Two (History) and Population Change (Geography). Firstly, we will be learning about the outbreak of the war and its impact on women, children and the soldiers who fought. We will investigate the Battle of Britain, the Blitz and the process of evacuation. We will study changes in the global population, investigate the impact of climate change and participate in detailed fieldwork study of how population impacts the amount of traffic and litter in an area.

Class Texts - Autumn

Anti-bullying Week 2023

For Anti-bullying Week 2023, Year Six learnt about 'banter' and 'bullying', and how friendly teasing can eventually become bullying. We explored what constitutes bullying and decided that it was 'repetitive', 'targeted' and 'intentional'. We looked at what cyberbullying can look like online (Snapchat) and we discussed how the recipient of the example messages would feel. We came up with guidance for how we can 'Make a Noise' about bullying and ensure that this does not happen to ourselves or anyone they know. We then created poems that we will put up around the school for other pupils to read and learn from.

Autumn 1

Our highlights from Autumn Term 1 include creating 3D artwork using the Chiaroscuro technique that blends light and dark; the pupils produced some excellent pieces. Following this, we learned about the illusive artist Banksy and we analysed their artwork. Inspired by their artwork, we created our own final pieces that held a hidden message. In History, whilst learning about World War Two, we wrote letters to our parents in the role of evacuees. We created propaganda posters based on the roles available to women during WWII. In Music, we improved our knowledge of pitch, tone and volume. We learned about different musical notes and then put them into practice using recorders. In Computing, we developed our coding skills and learned about the importance of online safety. In PE, we studied Invasion Games and learned about attacking, defending, communication and creating space. We played hockey, football, basketball and handball.
